Dr. Mark Redding

On Monday, May 9, 2022, marked the one-year passing of Mark Redding. CHAP, our

Community, the State of Ohio, and all across the United States lost an amazing servant leader.

Mark was a much-loved pediatrician who devoted his efforts to improving the health and social outcomes of underserved communities. Mark and his wife Sarah founded CHAP, and seeing a need across the country, they later founded The Pathways Community HUB Institute (PCHI).

In remembrance of Mark, Community Health Workers, Agency Supervisors, and CHAP HUB staff gathered to reflect on the influence he had on each of them as well as many thousands of clients. Also, during the gathering, CHAP renamed the conference room to the “Dr. Mark Redding Conference Room”. While Mark’s passing is a significant loss, his work touched so many people’s lives, and this impact drives those that will continue his efforts.

CHW Highlight

June 20, 2022

A Community Health Worker (CHW) is an individual who reaches out to those most at risk and assesses their medical, social, and behavioral health risk factors. The CHW then connects the client with the needed resources.

This month we are highlighting Brenda Alexander with the Urban Minority Alcoholism & Drug Abuse Outreach Program (UMADAOP) where Brenda has been a CHW for 22 years.

Brenda has always enjoyed working in healthcare. Before becoming a CHW, she held different positions in the healthcare industry including being an Emergency Medical Technician. What drew her to working as a CHW specifically was the opportunity to help those in need including the elderly.

As a CHW, one of Brenda’s responsibilities when she first meets with a client is to determine what type of risk factors that individual has. Over time patterns emerge as to which risk factors tend to be more common for many of her clients. Brenda indicates a lack of medical services is a common obstacle for her clients. When a health care professional is available, Brenda encourages the client to be diligent and consistent with the medical provider's treatment plan and she also assists in scheduling appointments for clients. Brenda shared that a client's health is critical for their well-being and that of their child or children.

A typical CHW day for Brenda is a substantial focus on client follow up to determine their needs. She connects them with the appropriate resources to meet those needs. Considering this, every client is unique, as are the challenges that must be addressed. Barriers to self-reliance include overcoming substance abuse as well as addressing their own physical and mental health needs. Brenda’s ultimate goals are to work with, support, and educate her clients so they can eventually be self-sufficient.

Brenda enjoys doing whatever she can do to go above and beyond for her clients.  She believes the skills that are most critical to being a successful CHW is being able to communicate and forming a bond with the client, as this leads to trust that is so critical so a CHW can get the client the help that they need.

Over the years Brenda has worked with many individuals and families in need of help. One of the most memorable client success stories that she shared involved a mother who was raising 3 children. Brenda assisted the mother by sitting with one of the children in their kindergarten class as a means of support. At times the child would get overwhelmed and run out of the classroom. When that happened, it was Brenda who would go get the child, comfort the child, and then take the child back to class. Years later, Brenda saw the mother, who is now a nurse, and she expressed overwhelming gratitude for Brenda’s assistance.

Outside of work, Brenda enjoys spending time with and supporting her aunt, reading, and taking ownership of her own health and spirituality.

Thank you, Brenda!  CHAP is very appreciative of the attention and dedication that you provide to all your clients.
